Smelt or Odontesthes regia, is an epipelagic species from the Atherinopsidae family, distributed from northern Pacific coast of Peru to Chile. It has a fusiform and depressed body, with medium sized cycloid scales, head and small mouth, tiny teeth in both jaws. The Peruvian silverside is silvery gray, darker on the back and clear, iridescent in the womb. The tail and fins are gray flanks with stoles. As for their fins are thin films crossed by rigid rods that give the specimen roughness it shows four paired fins, two pectoral and two pelvic fins and four odd, a flow, an anal and two dorsal fins different. Its size is 20 cm but may be specimens up to 37 cm.
